Food Truck Roundup to benefit U-District Food Bank – May 19th

You’ll want to mark your calendar for this one – May 19th, from 3-7 pm, the Phinney Neighborhood Center will become home to a wealth of local food trucks along with local beverage  providers and live music.

It’s all to benefit the University District Food Bank, which provides groceries to over 1100 families each week.    But unlike the U-District Food Bank fundraisers we usually see throughout the year, this one isn’t going directly to the food – it’s going towards the building.  Currently, the food bank operates out of an 800-sq ft facility.  This event, called “Fight Hunger, Build Hope” is the kick-off to raise $2.75M for a new, larger facility that can accommodate all the customers it serves.

The event itself will cost $25 for entry, and that gets you eight tastes from food trucks plus four drink sips from local distillers and brewers (this is a 21 & over event).   There will also be live entertainment throughout the afternoon.

You can purchase tickets here for either $25, or make a $125 donation to also receive a community cookbook with recipes from many of our favorite food trucks.

Cinco de Mayo in North Seattle, 2012

Have you ever actually listened to the lyrics of “My Girl” and wondered exactly what they were thinking?  ”When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May.”  Except, May is usually still fairly cold, and pretty rainy – just look outside right now.  The Temptations must have never been to the Pacific Northwest.

Temperature aside, May is here, and for those who celebrate it, Cinco de Mayo actually falls on a Saturday this year (meaning you can avoid calling in sick to work the next day).  If you’re celebrating the 5th of May, North Seattle Sarah has you covered with some of the best parties in town.

First off, Tacos Guaymas is having their annual Cinco Party in Green Lake.  If you haven’t checked this out, it’s a pretty packed outdoor event and probably the largest Cinco de Mayo party in north Seattle.  Live DJ, Sauza Girls, and a mariachi band are just a few of the fun things you can expect at Tacos Guaymas, with several thousand people anticipated to attend each year.

Down in Fremont, celebrate the evening with live music at Nectar.  The Yogoman Burning Band plays at 8pm, and tickets are $7.

At COA Mexican Eatery (7919 Roosevelt Way NE), enjoy $5 AHA Toro Margaritas, plus $2 street tacos and a $100 giveaway.  They’ll also have pinatas and a bouncy house from 12pm to 3pm.

Other venues that typically run specials for Cinco de Mayo include The Matador in Ballard and El Chupacabra in Phinney Ridge.  Remember to please stay safe on Cinco-de-Drinko and either hoof it locally or call a cab – those margaritas can be mighty strong.  Enjoy!

November 12th: Fight Hunger and Cook Local in the U-District (if you do one thing this year, make it this)

If you do just one “thing” that I’ve blogged about all year, make it this.  While all the Occupy Wall Street protests are continuing, remind yourself that YOU should be helping support your neighbors with all your purchases – and north Seattle is an incredible place to do all your holiday shopping.

When it comes to cooking the big meals this holiday season, take a tip from our local farmer’s markets – actually, take a lot of tips, and buy fresh while you’re at it.  This Saturday, November 12th, visit the University District Farmers Market for more than just great food - there will also be speakers and events to help you cook for the holidays.

At 10 a.m., Amy Pennington, author of Urban Pantry, will be demonstrating a Thanksgiving breakfast.

At 11:30 a.m., Craig Hetherington will be teaching people how to make his Swiss chard gratin.  Craig is from Taste SAM restaurant.

The University District Farmer’s Market is held year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of 50th and University Way NE.

AS AN ADDED BONUS, Will Bake for Food will be held at the same time, from 11 a.m. to 2 pm., across the street at the University Heights Center (5031 University Way NE).  Important: Bring cash and non-perishable food donations.  You can purchase baked goods to benefit The Emergency Feeding Program, which provides emergency response to people in crisis hunger situations.  Also important: come early, as Will Bake for Food’s press release warned that they were completely sold out in 90 minutes at last year’s function.

I hope to run into a few of you there!  Remember, the best way to Occupy Wall Street is to go and physically occupy the businesses of the little guys - our local growers, store owners and charitable organizations.  Help feed your own hunger, and the hunger of others, this weekend.
