“The Big One” – Phinney Greenwood Art Walk Today and Tomorrow

It’s always a blast to attend the monthly Phinneywood Art Up Art Walk, but tonight and tomorrow it’s even more special – it’s the annual “Big One” – the biggest art walk of the year, with ideal weather to boot.

The Art Walk runs from 6pm to 9 pm this evening, May 11th, and then again tomorrow May 12th from 12pm to 5pm.  Stops for the walk run from 60th to 87th along Phinney and Greenwood Avenues.   For a full list of locations participating with either art, entertainment or food specials, see the website here.

BUT, if you’re short on time and want to make the most of it, take North Seattle Sarah’s advice for the must-see stops along the way.  The best one being The Yard Cafe – where for the second year in a row, Firelight Forge will be set up in the yard creating metal art right in front of you.  Other recommendations are to stop into 826 Seattle (The Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company) to see collections by both adults and children, and then check out the food specials at Ridge Pizza.

Oh, and look out for me and North Seattle Lola as we wander the streets tomorrow!

Review: Ridge Pizza – bringing the “neighborhood” back into “neighborhood pizza”

I don’t write reviews about local businesses too often, mostly because I would much rather have someone go out and experience a place for themselves rather than take my word on it.  I’m not an expert on food, or drinks, and I would rather write an informative blog that educates my readers enough to figure out just what they’re going to do for the weekend.

But I had to write about Ridge Pizza, after finally making it in there Friday evening.  From the start, Ridge Pizza has the one thing that I think everyone can agree we love: An adult/bar section and a separate family friendly section, so that those of us that don’t want to sit with kids don’t have to, and those of us that have kids still have a place they can go out without finding a babysitter.  This is what I think of as the “perfect balance” of any restaurant.

I chose to sit in the family part of the restaurant with a friend, and totally loved glancing around at the art on the walls, which was blown up old photographs of what the neighborhood used to look like back in the day.  Really interesting to see.  Don’t like the art?  That’s ok too – there’s multiple TV’s to watch with sporting events on.  Or, just pay attention to the people you came with!  There’s music, but it’s not so intrusive to make conversation difficult.

The menu was my favorite part – the pizzas are all named after local businesses and the toppings really suit the name – there’s the Prost!, which has bratwurst and sauerkraut, or the Yanni’s with olives, roasted garlic and Roma tomatoes.  The classic pepperoni is the True Value, named for the hardware store next door.

As if bringing the neighborhood together on a menu wasn’t enough, there are three pizzas – The Zoo, The Firefighter, and The Community Center – where $1 from the cost of the pie goes towards the respective organization (Woodland Park Zoo, The Firefighter’s Fund, and the Phinney Ridge Community Center).

The pizza was tasty – the beer selection decent, and there was even cider on tap.  Ridge Pizza is located at 7217 Greenwood Ave N in Phinney Ridge.

New pizza, beer and coffee opening up in North Seattle

In this economy I get so excited to see new businesses opening up shop.  This month, I want to welcome three businesses to three north Seattle neighborhoods.

In Phinney Ridge, The Ridge Pizza just opened this week at 7217 Greenwood Ave N, next to the True Value.  Funny enough, The True Value is one of the styles of pizza you can order, along with other pizzas named after neighboring businesses.  The Ridge is family friendly, and brought to us from the same people who own Prost! up the street.  The Ridge is open for lunch and dinner, and serves beer, wine and full bar along with pizza and sandwiches.

In Ballard, Urban Family Public House opened its doors last night for the first time at 5329 Ballard Ave NW.  The Brewery/restaurant features 14 taps of national and international beers, and is open Monday through Friday from 4pm and weekends from 11am.   Don’t let the name confuse you, this is a 21 & over establishment (for now).

And in Green Lake, we are almost ready for more coffee, this time coming to us from Forza Coffee Company.  Forza’s newest location will be opening official on January 21st, at 8:14 a.m. to honor the four Lakewood Police officers who were killed at the Parkland Forza in 2009.  Next week, Forza will have some limited hours of “soft opening” to help train their new staff.  This particular Forza location will also serve beer and wine.  It’s located in the Circa Building at 6900 East Green Lake Way N.

Welcome to the neighborhood, new businesses, and I’ll be seeing you soon!

Roundup: New businesses coming to North Seattle

It may seem like the economy is in a national stand-still, but even so, we’ve got a few new businesses opening up shop this month in north Seattle.  Make sure you check them out and support our local spots!

Book Larder, a community cookbook store at 4252 Fremont Ave North, is opening their doors tomorrow (Wednesday, October 11th) at 11 a.m.  A friend of mine got to take a sneak peek last weekend and says it’s an amazing experience.   They’ll also have guest authors and chefs in on a regular basis.

Bluebird Microcreamery, with its main location in Capitol Hill, has two exciting new locations.  The first, in Fremont at 3515 Fremont Ave N, opened up during the last week of September.   The second location is in Phinney Ridge at 7400 Greenwood Ave North, and opens this Friday.  You may have noticed the Bluebird ice cream stand outside that space this summer, offering a sampling of what they’ll have in the store.

Ridge Pizza will be opening its doors soon, also in Phinney Ridge at 7217 Greenwood Ave North.  There isn’t an exact date yet, but they hope to be open by the end of the month.

Red Mill Totem House is opening today (October 11th) in Ballard at 3058 NW 54th St.  If you’ve ever had Red Mill at their Phinney Ridge or Interbay location, you know that Ballard is in for a real treat (just remember, Red Mill only takes cash or checks).

Forza Coffee is opening a location later this year in Green Lake, their construction is already well underway.  Stay tuned for more details on that one as we get a little closer to opening – it will occupy a space near I Love Hot Yoga in the Circa apartment building.

With all these new openings coming up (not to mention Green Lake’s Cake Envy that opened just a couple weeks ago), it’s hard not to go out and spend a good time in the ‘hood!
