Seattle Beer Week: Your North Seattle Picks

Seattle Beer Week is soon to be upon us again.  The fifth year running, this year’s Beer Week falls on May 9th through the 19th and as usual, is sure to include something for everyone.  Although I do like to expand my horizons out of the neighborhood a little for this one, here are my North Seattle event picks!

  • On May 10th, head to Brouwers in Fremont for the Underberg Back in Black Stout Fest – 40+ stouts on tap.  Event runs all day
  • On May 11th, it’s time to head to Hale’s Ales for Brewgrass – a collaboration of beer & music with 10 local breweries and 3 bands, benefiting NW Harvest.  Starts at 5pm and you can buy your tickets here.
  • On May 12th, it’s Mother’s Day. So treat your mother to one of her favorite movies – Psycho.  DJ Nicfit plays this film at Naked City’s screening room to a live soundtrack, and I can say from experience it’s amazing.  Starts at 8pm in Greenwood.
  • May 13th, check out the Sierra Nevada dinner at the Burgundian in Tangletown.   5 beers paired with 5 dishes (exact beers & dishes tbd).  This starts at 6pm.
  • On May 14th, check out Beer & Burger Battle back at Brouwer’s in Fremont.  It runs all day long, and pits six brewers against each other to design the best burger.
  • On May 15th, don’t miss the annual Latona Pub Cask Fest in Green Lake.  A huge selection of cask beers, starting at 6pm.
  • On May 16th, try out pFriem Family Brewing at Art of the Table in Wallingford.  Everyone is buzzing about this brewery, and the restaurant is pairing up 7 courses to match.  The reception starts at 6:30, dinner served at 7.  Call the restaurant at (206) 282-0942 for a reservation.  Dinner is $95/person + tax/tip.
  • After taking a few nights off to repair your liver, celebrate the last day of Beer Week with The Dray in Phinney Ridge.  The Dray has a celebration of its own that day – their 5th Birthday!  There will be special brews from Firestone Walker, and tacos from The Yard.

Make sure you don’t miss one or two other events in the rest of the city either, as there’s plenty to do!  You can check out the full schedule here.

Latona Pub’s IPA Final Four Bracket – fill it out before Tuesday!

After a successful few years, Latona Pub’s IPA Final Four Challege is back – and brackets need to be filled out and submitted by Tuesday afternoon.

If you’re used to losing the NBA March Madness brackets each year, and know your beers better than your sports teams (I admit, I choose my NBA teams based on how cute the mascot is), then this is definitely the event for you.

Starting Monday, March 18th, Latona Pub will put sets of IPA’s on tap – three at a time.  Your job is to predict which keg will blow first.  They’ll do this four times (timing depends on when the kegs blow), and then the four winners will be put on tap against each other.

Don’t think this is easy though – The first round features Green Flash, Boneyard, and Boundary Bay.  Boneyard won the entire event last year, and Boundary Bay won the year before – so it’ll be a tight race.

Other IPA’s coming up in the tournament include Black Raven’s Trickster, 7 Seas Rude Parrot, Elysian’s Space Dust, and of course, Georgetown’s Lucille.

Brackets are available now to be filled out at Latona Pub in Green Lake and turned in before the first keg blows – likely on Tuesday afternoon.

Celebrate 25 Years with Latona Pub all this week

This year, Latona Pub in Green Lake has been celebrating their 25th Anniversary in style with a custom brew made for them each month by a local brewery.  If you have attended one of the anniversary brewer’s nights, you’ve been treated to raffles, prizes and a crowd of supporters.

August marks the actual month of Latona Pub’s 25th Anniversary, and this week is a full extravaganza.  From August 13th (TODAY) through the 18th, the pub has special events every night.  Here’s the full list of what’s happening at Latona:

Monday, August 13th – Elysian Brewer Appreciation Night.  This marks the release of Latona’s 25th Anniversary beer from Elysian Brewing.

Tuesday, August 14th – Big Time & the All-Star Brewers.  This is a celebration of  our local Big Time Brewing, and Latona will be tapping their Pilsner and toasting their brewers.

Wednesday, August 15th –  A Salute to the First Pour.  A night with Georgetown Brewing, who shared their first pour with Latona.

Thursday, August 16th – the Latona Cask Festival.  Casks to be revealed on the day, pouring starts at 6pm.

Friday, August 17th – A Tribute to the Musical Artists of the Latona.  Happy hour jazz beginning at 5:30.

Saturday, August 18th – the big 25th Anniversary party.  A full line-up of all the 25th Anniversary beers we’ve seen this year, plus live music and barbecue.

Congratulations on 25 years, Latona!

Seattle Beer Week: Mid-Week picks in North Seattle

Last night as part of Seattle Beer Week, I went to the special Brewer’s Dinner at Naked City Taphouse in Greenwood.  Eight fabulous courses paired with beer included fried chicken, buffalo carpaccio, smoked trout, rabbit rillet and lamb shank.  The great news is that Naked City is going to put on dinners just like last night’s once every quarter, so if you missed it you can come again next time.

In the meantime, Seattle Beer Week is in full swing, and doesn’t take a break just because we have weekday jobs.  So here’s my picks for this week’s north Seattle Beer Week:

  • On Tuesday (5/15), head to Brouwer’s Cafe in Fremont for the Beer and Burger Battle. It runs from 5pm to 11pm and features beer and burgers from reigning champs Fremont Brewing, along with New Belgium, 21st Amendment, Black Raven, and Hair of the Dog.
  • On Wednesday (5/16) make your way to Ballard for Snipes Mountain Sour Night at The Noble Fir.  Event runs from 4pm to 8pm.  Not a sour fan?  If IPA’s are more your thing, go to Big Time Brewery in the U-District for their IPA Cask Fest – pouring all day.
  • On Thursday, please please PLEASE don’t miss Latona Pub’s annual “Wall of Casks.”  They physically build up a wall/pyramid of great cask beers for a fun night, starting at 6pm in east Green Lake.

Stay safe out there everyone, don’t drink and drive, and enjoy the mid-week festivities!

Non-Motorized Beer Delivery returns to Latona Pub for Earth Week

Of all the events Latona Pub in Green Lake puts on for us throughout the year, the Earth Week festivities have to be my favorite.   For one week every year, all the beer that comes to Latona Pub will come by some means other than motorized transportation.  This means kegs can be walked (with a hand truck), delivered by bicycle, or even come by rowboat (any other ideas? Let them know!).

Everything kicks off tomorrow – Sunday, April 15th – with the beginning of the keg deliveries.  Kegs come from as close as our local north Seattle breweries like Big Time, Naked City, and Northgate Ram, to as far away as Black Raven Brewing (Redmond -16.6 miles away).

In addition to saving the planet by saving fuel and decreasing their carbon footprint, Latona Pub also hosts a few events during the week.  For Earth Week 2012, there is a “Local Food Awareness” night on Thursday, April 19th beginning at 7pm.  A portion of proceeds that night will go towards Chef’s Collaborative.

On Saturday, April 21st, bring your hazardous garbage – computers, electronics, batteries and fluorescent light bulbs – to Latona for a day of free disposal, from noon until 4pm.

Finally, on Sunday April 22nd finish the week with the Feet First benefit starting at 2 pm, with a special keg from Two Beers Brewing – the “Limited Edition Hand Truckin’ Wheat Ale.”  This event requires a pre-sale ticket which you can buy online for $20 at Feetfirst.org.

As a sign at one of my local faves Naked City says, “Save the earth – it’s the only planet with BEER!”

Cooper’s Alehouse 10th Annual IPA Fest with over 55 brews (Hopheads get ready)

Maple Leaf resident Josh Dylan pointed out to me recently that I write an awful lot about Latona Pub and just not enough about the other local watering holes.  I don’t mean to, but I don’t make it out of my immediate neighborhood too often.  So a big thanks to Josh for reminding me of a very cool event coming up at Cooper’s Alehouse at 8065 Lake City Way NE.

Cooper’s is getting ready for their 10th Annual IPA Fest coming April 6th through the 27th.  That may seem like a long time, but it’s just long enough to pour over 55 different IPAs – with a minimum of 12 beers on at any given time.

Details about a few of the special beers to be tapped will be announced soon, but Cooper’s won’t be having Brewer’s Nights and won’t be doing any special “Rare Beer Announcements” (to avoid what they refer to as the Pliny Poachers, people who come in and suck up all the “special” beer before the regulars can).  They will be putting their taplist on their Facebook and Twitter feeds for those that want to take a look before heading down.

This year, Cooper’s is adding something very cool to the IPA Fest – they plan to have four unmarked taps at all times so that people can have their own blind tastings.  The unmarked taps will rotate about once per week (or sooner if the keg is blown).  As new beers come on to the unmarked taps, the previous week’s beers will be announced so people can know what they were tasting.  Anyone think they’re up to the challenge?

Monday 3/19: Black Raven Visits Latona Pub in Green Lake

Month 3: The Anniversary Beers continue.  For those of you that follow either my blog or the goings-on at Latona Pub, you’ll know that they’ve been celebrating their 25th Anniversary with a specially-brewed beer each month and will continue to do so through to the anniversary day in August.

Everything started in January with North Sound Brewing’s Wargalamercon Beer.  Then last month, the infamous John Maier from Rogue Brewing brought his special “Latona Bob,” named after the pub’s owner Bob Brenlin.  March will not disappoint - the ever-so-creative Black Raven Brewing is bringing their anniversary concoction to the pub on Monday, March 19th.

Black Raven has whipped up what they call ESP – the Extra Special Pepper beer.  I’m guessing by that name, it will probably have a bit of a kick.  Naturally, Black Raven will also be bringing a few of their other beers, and the brewers will be on hand as well.

The beers go on tap tomorrow afternoon, but the party officially “begins” around 8p.m.  I can tell you from personal experience that coming early is a wise idea!

March IPA Madness at Latona Pub – Fill out your bracket now

UPDATE 3/8:  Bracket entries are now closed.  The winner from round one of the IPA Bracket is Boundary Bay, whose keg blew around 7:30 last night.

Finally, a March Madness I can get into.  Latona Pub in east Green Lake has announced the beer contenders for their IPA Final Four Bracket contest.  Brackets are available to be picked up at the pub, and must be returned before happy hour next Wednesday, March 7th.

Here’s how it works: Beginning March 5th, three IPAs at a time will be put on tap and the first keg to blow advances to the next level.  The other first round pourings will happen on March 9th, March 12th, and March 16th.  On your bracket form, you predict which of the three kegs will win for each occurrence – and remember, it could take a couple of days for a winner to be determined.  The four winners from those preliminary rounds will go back on tap for the Final Four on March 23rd.  If you’re lucky enough to have guessed correctly on at least a few of the first round drinks, the last round asks you to rate in which order the Final Four winners from the previous round will blow their casks.

Washington beers have some mighty strong competition this year against a few out-of-state contenders like Ninkasi Total Domination and Stone IPA.  I’m not revealing my vote just yet, but I will tell you it’s a Seattle area brewery.

Latona Pub celebrates 25th Anniversary with custom beers, starting this week

Forget the 12 days of Christmas – how about the 8 months of custom beer?  That’s what Latona Pub, at 65th and Latona, is bringing to Green Lake starting this week. To celebrate 25 years of business this year (which will happen in August), Latona Pub is serving up a special custom brew created with a different brewery each month.

This Thursday, January 5th, the first beer will be tapped at 5 p.m.  It was brewed with North Sound Brewing, who will be on hand for a meet-and-greet, and the official festivities will kick off at 8 p.m.  The first beer will feature both Galaxy and Meridian Hops.

Naturally, you don’t have to ask if I’ll be there – that’s a given.  Come say hi!

Latona Pub Hop Harvest Party – September 25th

Latona Pub will be holding their first “Hop Harvest” Party this month on Sunday, September 25th from 2pm to 8pm.

As part of the harvest celebration, Latona will have cask-conditioned beers from Big Al Brewing, Hale’s Ales, Iron Horse, Schooner Exact, and Two Beers Brewing.

They’ll also have food and other draft beer specials.  I’ll be there - you should be too!
