TOMORROW: Washington Beer Open House. Expand your north Seattle horizons.

Tomorrow (February 23rd) is the annual Washington Beer Open House event – a day when, from noon until 5 pm, you can visit a number of Washington breweries for a special behind the scenes look, a tasty new treat, or perhaps a chance to meet the man behind the brewery door.

We’re incredibly lucky in north Seattle to have a plethora of the state’s awesome breweries, so I encourage you to get out to at least one of them tomorrow that you might not have been to before and expand your local beer horizons.

In north Seattle, you’ll find the following places participating in the Washington Beer Open House:

  • Fremont Brewing – Fremont
  • Hales Ales – Frelard
  • Hilliards – Ballard
  • Northwest Peaks – Ballard
  • Maritime Pacific – Ballard
  • Reuben’s Brews – Ballard
  • Naked City Brewery – Greenwood
  • Elliott Bay Brewery – Lake City

Been to them all already?  Great.  Try something new.  Venture further out from our area to visit American Brewing in Edmonds, or perhaps Black Raven Brewing in Redmond.  You can view the full list of participating breweries here.

Cheers!

Saturday: Washington Beer Open House in North Seattle

This weekend is the annual Washington Beer Open House, and six north Seattle breweries are taking part.  On Saturday February 25th between 12pm and 5pm, the breweries open their doors for special events throughout the state.  In north Seattle, guests can visit Naked City Brewery & Taphouse, Big Time Brewery, Fremont Brewing, Maritime Pacific, Hilliard’s Beer, and the new Elliott Bay Public House in Lake City.

Here’s a few ways some of the breweries are making Saturday special:

  • Maritime Pacific in Ballard will be offering brewery tours every hour beginning at 12:15 (last tour starts at 4:15).  They’ll have some special beers on tap for the day.
  • Big Time Brewery in the U-District will have brewery tours and special cask-conditioned Icculus IPA.
  • Naked City Brewing in Greenwood is going to be pulling samples of their famous Big Lebrewski off the brite tank and showing off the backroom brewery.
  • Hilliard’s Beer in Ballard is doing tours of the brewery every hour, and with have the Snout and Co mobile food truck serving up amber boiled Brats outside.
  • Elliott Bay Brewing is giving people a sneak peak of their newest location in Lake City - not yet open!

As of this time, Fremont has not announced what they might have on tap – all the more reason to go and be surprised! As people make their way through tomorrow’s Open House, they’re encouraged to tweet their trip and what they find.  You can use the hashtag #WaBeerOH to tweet and follow along.

Shops and Hops: North Seattle Breweries team up for the sake of Art

One of the thing I love about the local breweries, besides the beer and the good times, is the willingness to be active members of the community they reside in.  So I was excited to see that five local breweries are coming together in Ballard for a special art walk this March, for the sake of the Pratt Fine Arts Center.

On March 10th, from 4pm to 8pm, art-walkers can enjoy wandering through five studios and tasting beer from the five breweries, with their $50 general admission cost benefitting Pratt.  Pratt Fine Arts Center, located in the central district, provides art classes for all levels of artists and studio space for work to be done.

The artwalk will take place in Ballard, with featured studios Building C, Ballard Metal Arts, Fifty Four Sixteen Artist Collective, McNae Metals and Design, and Salty Dog Studios.  Participating breweries are Fremont Brewing, Hilliard’s Beer, Lantern Brewing, Maritime Pacific and NW Peaks Brewery.  Fremont Mischief Whiskey is included with a VIP ticket, which costs $75 and includes a tour of Ginny Ruffner’s home and studios.  Excited art and beer lovers can RSVP here (and if you do so before March 1st get a free custom pint glass).

Sweet Success at BitterSweet in Fremont

Close to 200 people flooded the warehouse at Fremont Brewing this past Thursday night for BitterSweet: Beer and Chocolate produced by Washington Beer Blog.  The event benefitted FamilyWorks, a food bank and family center in Wallingford, and paired eight area breweries with various treats from Theo Chocolate.

The crowd thickens with beer and chocolate lovers

Each brewery was asked to create a beer made with Theo Chocolate, and then to bring a beer that would pair well with some of the chocolates.  Naturally, the chocolate was on hand so that we could really taste the flavors. Some of the highlights included “Susan,” a Fremont Brewing dark beer with a chocolate rim on the glass, and Naked City’s ”Scholalade Weizen,” a wheat beer with Theo roasted chocolate nibs.

Naked City's Don Webb poses with his beers, Shokolade Weizen and The Big Lebrewski

Other breweries involved were Airways, Big Time, Black Raven, Elysian, Georgetown, and Two Beers Brewing.

BitterSweet & PNA Winter Beer Taste: 2 north Seattle beer events you need to know about

I just love the change of seasons:  Spring & Summer Ale, Oktoberfest…then its time for Winter Beer Festival season.  And this month, there are two events you do NOT want to miss.

The first is the 24th Annual PNA Winter Beer Taste, held by the Phinney Neighborhood Association at the Phinney Center (6532 Phinney Ave N).  This year, it falls on Saturday, November 12th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. (with a special preview tasting for “elevated” admission).

The PNA Winter Beer Taste gives people 10 tastings from 32 local breweries, which this year includes the new Ballard brewery Hilliards, as well as Lantern Brewing in Phinney Ridge.  You get all that for $35 (non PNA-members) or $25 (PNA-members).  For an additional $30 admission, which benefits the elevator fund for the Phinney Center, you can get a special preview taste starting at 6:15, plus a commemorative glass.

Your second beer event to put on the list is BitterSweet, a pairing of eight Seattle breweries with products from Theo Chocolate.  BitterSweet is the second event presented by Washington Beer Blog, and your $35 admission will include two beer tastes from each brewery, along with chocolate.  Breweries are each bringing one beer that pairs well with a Theo chocolate style, and one beer created by using the chocolate itself.

BitterSweet is next Thursday, November 10th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m, and will take place at Fremont Brewing (3409 Woodland Park Ave North).  Proceeds benefit FamilyWorks, a food bank and family center in Wallingford.

As an added bonus to you guys, you’ll get to spend both of these events hanging out with ME!  I’ll be helping out at BitterSweet, and attending the PNA Winter Beer Taste.  So come say hello!

Seattle Beer Week activities in north Seattle this weekend: The Yard, Prost and more

The 10-day event that has been Seattle Beer Week will have its grand closing “ceremony” this Sunday at The Yard Cafe on Greenwood Avenue.

The Yard, which has now opened to the public, features a Mexican-inspired menu of tacos and more with a mid-sized craft beer selection and full bar.   You can learn more about The Yard in my original post here.

The closing of Seattle Beer Week/Yard Grand Opening event will last all day Sunday, May 29th.  As one of their biggest draws is the extensive outdoor seating area, lets hope for some sunshine!

Just up the street from The Yard at Prost! in Phinney Ridge you’ll find a fun German-themed beer week event all weekend, “Tickel your Zwick’l.” This will be the first time that Zwickl’l Kellerbier has been imported into the United States from Bayreuther Brewery in Bavaria.   If you’re a little “beered out,” like I am, then you might enjoy Eve of the Apple II at Duck Island Ale House this Saturday – a night devoted to cider instead.

If you’re closer to Fremont Sunday, stop into Fremont Brewing at 12pm for their BBQ and Free “Oh Sweet Baby Jesus, What Have I Done to my Liver” Testing.  This is a time to reflect on the past week and vow to never drink this much beer again (until next year).

Earth Week: How beers from 10+ breweries will get to Latona Pub without motorized transport!

Latona Pub has got Earth Week down – all the beers on tap during Earth Week next week are being delivered without the use of trucks or motorized vehicles - they’ll only come by foot, bike, hoof and sail.  That pretty much means sheer man power (and animal power, and, ok, wind power) will bring you all the tasty concoctions you’ll enjoy next week!

The deliveries have already begun, with a keg of Trip 8 IPA delivered via bicycle yesterday from Elysian on Capitol Hill (about 5.5 miles on bike carrying roughly 72 pints of beer).  Trip 8 IPA is a collaborative effort between Elysian and New Belgium Brewing.  Today, a keg of Naked City’s Hoptrocity is making its way around Green Lake to the pub.

Monday night, April 18th, is the final installment of Latona’s Winter-into-Spring beer series with a brewer’s night from Pike Brewing Company featuring a keg of their cask conditioned Dry Wit (it’s good, take my word on it).  The event starts at 7pm sharp (which means, at Latona Pub, get there by 6 if you want to sit down).  To bring a keg from Pike to Latona on foot is estimated to be about a two-hour trek.  Also trekking it up on foot/by hand truck from south Seattle will be kegs from Georgetown, Two Beers Brewing, and Schooner Exact.

Next Thursday, the pub is coordinating to have kegs from Port Townsend Brewing brought over by sail power by Sail Transport Company.

On Friday next week, Earth Day, the north Seattle keg haul will include kegs from Maritime Pacific, Hale’s Ales, and Fremont Brewing (watch out for a horse and cart).  A keg of cask conditioned Sunburst from RAM Northgate will also be trekked down and tapped to celebrate the day.

So if you’re driving along over the next week and see a very tired looking man with a hand truck and a keg of craft beer, smile and wave – that’s just Elliott Ryan, general manager of Latona Pub out doing his best for the planet.  And for fun, follow along on Latona’s Facebook Page for pictures and updates!

(Writer’s note: I WILL be there Monday for Pike Brewer’s Night and Friday for Earth Day, so feel free to buy me a drink.)

Washington Beer Open House: 4 north Seattle breweries you’ll want to see

Turns out I’m not the only one holding an open house this weekend (if you’re interested, mine is Sunday from 11-2 at the new Willowdale Townhomes in Edmonds).

Saturday, February 26th is the Washington Beer Open House from noon to 4pm, with four north Seattle breweries participating and opening their doors to let you peek behind the curtain.

Here are the participating breweries:

Big Time Brewery, located in the U-District at 4133 University Way NE

Maritime Pacific Brewing Company, located at 1111 NW Ballard Way in Ballard

Fremont Brewing, located in (duh) Fremont at 3409 Woodland Park Avenue N

Naked City Brewing, in Greenwood at 8564 Greenwood Ave N

Chances are you won’t make it to all four, but it’s a great opportunity to get out in your neighborhood and meet the craft beer makers that are putting Seattle on the map in the brewing world.

For a full list of all the breweries throughout Washington participating this Saturday, visit the Washington Beer Commission here.
