Friday night I visited 5 Corner Market, located at 220o NW Market Street in Ballard 5 Corner Market just opened back in mid – December, in the place of the old Lombardi’s Italian restaurant.
For a new spot, this place was pretty full – but it was also extremely spacious so there was no wait for a table. I rarely go into the main streets of Ballard on a weekend night for fear of having to park miles away (which I did), and for knowing that wherever I choose to go, half the population of north Seattle will decide to go there too. But this time was different – once I stepped inside, everything slowed down just a little bit and got a little more peaceful.
The menu is a strange and eclectic mix. Beginning with the drinks, there’s extensive beer list and an extensive whiskey list. Did I say extensive? Replace the “t” with a “p” and it’s that too – some of the beers on the list cost upwards of $30, a little steep for one drink. But they have a decent selection of lower-end beers too – just don’t expect to find Bud Light on the menu.
As for food, I ordered off the “small plates” menu and still got a hefty portion. I got the smoked chicken thighs in barbecue sauce with corn bread and salad – delicious – and probably one of the most “plain” items served. 5 Corner Market boasts dishes such as foie gras, veal breast and duck confit. However, the menu is updated monthly, according to their Web site.
5 Corner Market is definitely worth a visit. For those that balk at the sheer amount of bars and restaurants popping up in Ballard, don’t worry – there’s plenty of business to go around. Plus remember, by dining locally, you’re directly contributing to the local economy by putting cash in the pockets of local entrepreneurs, chefs, waiters and bar staff!
